Meet The Press – August 18, 2013

Guests:
Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH)
Sen. Jack Reed (D-RH)
Richard Engel
Robin Wright
Ben Jealous – NAACP
Sybrina Fulton
Benjamin Crump
Donna Edwards
Bob Gibbs
Rich Lowry
Chuck Todd

Gregory: what about Egypt?

Ayotte: we should defeat the
muslim brotherhood at the ballot box

Gregory: President Ted Cruz says
we are encouraging the muslim
brotherhood to be violent with all our massive aid

Reed: Saudi Arabia provide lots of aid too

Gregory: but American money is better

Reed: we need to enage in the whole region

Gregory: please bash Obama for me

Ayotte: he should have said we will
suspend aid until Egypt restores democracy

Gregory: but the military will keep
the Suez canal open

Reed: we need the canal open and
a nice functioning democracy

Gregory: well sure

Reed: look Fluffy it takes time and there's
going to be some zigs and zags

Gregory: Richard what's happening in Egypt?

Engel: people in Egypt think it would
be a disaster for Egypt and the
U.S. to cut off aid – it would break
the spirit of Camp David and would
ally the US with the muslim brotherhood

Gregory: interesting

Engel: hell even Egypt and Israel agree!

Gregory: what can't the U.S. control
the situation in Egypt? Why??

Wright: the Egypt military is thumbing
its nose at America – it's unacceptable

Gregory: could Egypt fall apart?

Engel: yes people are being killed
on both sides – but if the US cuts off
aid the muslim brotherhood would
take that as a sign the US is on their side

Wright: these events send a signal
in the middle east that democracy doesn't work

Gregory: too bad

[ break ]

Gregory: Ray a federal judge ruled
that stop-and-frisk is racist and unconstitutional

Kelly: the judge called all cops racist – so unfair!

Gregory: so sad

Kelly: look we stopped 4 million people

Gregory: are you perhaps stopping too many people

Kelly: there are no innocent people –
there are only people who are
probably criminals or soon will be

Gregory: got it

Kelly: the Rand Corporation told the
NYPD that black teenagers are criminals

Gregory: that's your best argument
– the Rand Corporation?

Kelly: hey Fluffy they've been around for 100 years

Gregory: well peachy

Kelly: also there are some
black police officers

Gregory: it sounds like you saying
all young black men are suspicious

Kelly: well fine but black neighborhoods
are full of crime and murders are at
an all-time record low

Gregory: that's good

Kelly: stop-and-frisk saved thousands
of lives of young black men

Gregory: if stop-and-frisk is
abandonded will people die?

Kelly: no question many people
will be murdered

Gregory: wow

Kelly: stop-and-frisk is not some program –
it's pretty all NYC cops do all day

Gregory: thanks for coming

[ break ]

Jealous: this guy wants to be head of
Homeland Security and he oversees
a program that routinely violates the Constitution

Gregory: he says its saves lives

Jealous: the drop in crime started before
stop-and-frisk started

Gregory: is that so

Jealous: under Giuliani 80,000 people
were stopped under Bloomberg
it's exploded to 600,000

Gregory: so by my math that 60% more

Jealous: 90% of those stopped
didn't even have a weapon

Fulton: you shouldn't stop
someone just based on the
color of their skin

Crump: Trayvon Martin was
just walking home and was
racially profiled and killed

Fulton: we are trying to get Stand Your Ground
laws changed around this country –
we are in this fight for long haul

Gregory: Ben we are now having
a conversation about how much
surveillance is needed and how
aggressive police need to be in
this scary era of rapidly dropping crime

Jealous: this is about more than race –
it's about the freedom to walk out
the door without being threatened by the cops

Gregory: thanks for coming

[ break ]

Gregory: OMG Hillary Clinton is
running for President!!

Todd: this is shocking because people
used to like and now she's in favor of
people voting everyone will hate her

Gregory: Rich Lowry you say she is
low and dishonest and creating hatred

Lowry: Voter ID laws are very popular
and if you criticize them you are a
race-baiting demagogue

Edwards: um okay

Gibbs: she should have laid low
for a couple of years

Todd: right

Gibbs: Clinton didn't enter the
race until the fall of 1991

Gregory: Newt Gingrich said Clinton
a liberal and a loser

Lowry: she has an amazing resume
but the GOP have young fresh faces

Gregory: do Democrats want another
Clinton or another Obama?

Edwards: she doesn't need to
fight for the base – the nomination
is hers for the asking

Gibbs: so why is she campaigning so early?

Todd: if Hillary Clinton keeps giving
speeches it makes Obama a lame duck

[ break ]

Gregory: Chris Christie says the GOP
doesn't need intellectual pinheads
likes Rand Paul – they need power

Lowry: they're both right – we the bad
ideas of Rand Paul with the terrible
campaigns of Mitt Romney

Gregory: good point

Lowry: Christie can run for President as
the only moderate in a sea of crazies
and that's a good way to win

Gibbs: fewer debates is a good idea –
the more people saw of GOP candidates
the less they like them

Gregory: I miss Ronald Reagan

Todd: Chris Christie could win
over fat white guys

Gregory: true

Todd: but he would yet another moderate
when GOP moderates keep losing

Gibbs: Newt Gingrich says the GOP
should not just be against Obama
but actually have their own governing vision

Lowry: I agree with that – for example
we need to argue that Obamacare
is ruining America

Gregory: this is the 50th anniversay
of the march on Washington and
Martin Luther King appeared on
Meet The Press arguing for political and
social and economnic equality

Edwards: it's amazing how far we've
come but we need more economic equality

Lowry: MLK like Abraham Lincoln challenged
America to live up to the ideals of
the Declaration of Independence

Gibbs: he is indeed a 20th century Founding Father

Gregory: and that another episode
of Meet The Press

This Week with George Stephanopoulos – August 18, 2013

Guests:
Muhammed Lila
Martha Raddatz
Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN)
Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY)
Bill Kristol
Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MI)
Reince Preibus
David Plouffe
Carly Fiorina

Stephanopoulos: Egypt is on the edge of civil war!

Lila: the muslim brotherhood is willing to fight to the death

Stephanopoulos: can there be a peaceful solution?

Lila: no because both sides feel
they are fighting for very survival

Stephanopoulos: How come America
doesn't get to decide what happens in Egypt

Raddatz: I don't understand it – it's like it's
another country or something

Stephanopoulos: it's baffling –
should the U.S. invade Egypt?

Raddatz: the U.S. must choose a red line
before we attack so we can determine
what happens in that other country

Stephanopoulos: Bob how can you
justify giving aid to Egypt?

Corker: George I hate to break to you
but we don't give them that much money

Stephanopoulos: too bad

Corker: this whole conversation is naive –
I don't care what happens in Egypt
as long as the Suez canal stays open

Stephanopoulos: Eliot you're with me right?

Engel: no – we can support a military
coup or the muslim brotherhood

Stephanopoulos: that's a tough one

Engel: I wish we had total control over
another country but they have this
weird idea they are a sovereign nation

Stephanopoulos: those wacky foreigners
have some nutty ideas

Engel: oh I know

Stephanopoulos: please bash Obama for me

Corker: look we need to keep up
a relationship with Egypt

Stephanopoulos: answer the question

Corker: Obama ruined Iraq and
then that country is become violent

Stephanopoulos: well that is a surprise

Engel: it may feel good to cut off aid
just because the government is
murdering people but it won't accomplish anything

Stephanopoulos: interesting idea

Engel: you go with the military coup
you have not the military you want

Stephanopoulos: will someone agree
with me on cutting off aid?

Ellison: yes – we can start giving money
again when they stop the bloodshed

Stephanopoulos: Israel wants to
keep the aid flowing!

Kristol: because they hate
muslim brotherhood

Stephanopoulos: ok

Kristol: most of my friends want to
cut off aid but I think we should keep it

Stephanopoulos: you have such a great track record

Ellison: we should suspend aid until
they create a democracy

Stephanopoulos: problem solved!

Stephanopoulos: is Obama spineless
or would this happen to any President?

Kristol: we look we weak for not
invading Syria therefore there is
internal instability in Egypt

Stephanopoulos: because everything
that happens in the world is because
of the United States

Raddatz: exactly

[ break ]

Stephanopoulos: Christie and Paul and
Cruz and McConnell are all fighting
each other - is the GOP in trouble?

Preibus: it's a healthy family debate –
like should Dad gamble more or
should Mom keep drinking?

Stephanopoulos: you reject NBC and CNN
over an movie about Hillary Clinton

Preibus: I'm trying to fix a GOP
that was terribly run in 2012

Stephanopoulos: you head of the party in 2012

Preibus: so I should know

Stephanopoulos: can you reach out to minorities?

Preibus: we are reaching out more
than the GOP ever has before

Stephanopoulos: wow

Preibus: look I can only control
the mechanics – not how crazy
the politicians are

Stephanopoulos: Bill how is the GOP?

Kristol: the liberal media wants the
GOP to roll over like puppies and
hate that the GOP are fighting back

Plouffe: their problem is that people hate their ideas and proposals

Fiorina: the problem with the GOP is
that women should be stopped from
controlling their bodies after 5 months
and no one in the media is willing to report that

Stephanopoulos: should the GOP shut down the government?

Kristol: Chris Christie is a great governor!

Stephanopoulos: thanks for coming everyone

Meet The Press - August 11, 2013

Guests:
Barton Gellman
Ted Koppel
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX)
Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO)
Rep. Steve King (R-IA)
Ana Navarro
David Brooks
David Ignatius
Bill Richardson
Ted Koppel
Kara Swisher

Gregory: Bart has Edward Snowden won?

Gellman: he has already accomplished
more than he ever dreamed of – he's got the
President announcing changes to the
nation's secret surveillance programs

Gregory: Obama says he was going to
reform surveillance anyway

McCaul: these are great programs and
Obama won't defend them and with the
fake IRS scandal no one can trust Obama
with their phone records even though
these are great programs

Koppel: the problem is which President
is going choose not to use a technology
which can stop a terrorist attack?

Gregory: don't we need speed to stop terrorists?

McCaul: exactly right Fluffy
– FISA warrants are a great hurdle
but maybe the Patriot Act has
been over interpreted

Gregory: Ted you say we have created
an industry of fear

Koppel: the terrorists were able to shut
down 20 embassies with a single conference call

McCaul: well sorry Ted but the threat is real

Gregory: uh huh

McCaul: Obama says we have to return
to a pre 9/11 mentality and he's very deceptive
and the threat of terrorism which
is getting worse not better

Gregory: what the hell are you talking about?

McCaul: Obama has a pre 9/11 mentality
because he's ramping up drone strikes

Gregory: that makes no sense

McCaul: also Obama wants to be a
peacemaker unlike Bush but we need
to reach out to Muslims more

Gregory: Ted are we overreacting or underreacting?

Koppel: terrorism is the weapon of
the weak against the strong

Gregory: I suppose

Koppel: we're the ones who invaded Iraq

McCaul: Obama is pre-9/11 and he
wants to wish the threat away and
he's irresponsible by doing nothing and
also closing embassies which I approve of

Gregory: you're all over the place

McCaul: I hate terrorists and Obama!

Gregory: okay okay

[ break ]

Gregory: Claire the military has a real sex assault problem

McCaskill: we have new rules to protect victims

Gregory: the big debate is whether the
case stays in the chain of command –
Kirsten Gillibrand says the chain of command
can't be trusted and you don't agree

McCaskill: outside lawyers can't be trusted either

Gregory: oh really?

McCaskill: if the commander has signed
on to the prosecution that sends a
strong protective message

Gregory: I suppose

McCaskill: we have to hold guilty
commanders responsible and also give them
all the decision-making responsibility

Gregory: that seems problematic

McCaskill: commanders are going to
retaliate anyway so we might as well
give them the power

Gregory: isn't sex assault Obama's fault
for not naming a woman Secretary of Defense?

McCaskill: the women on the Armed Services
committee are going to hold the Pentagon's
feet to the fire on this David

[ break ]

Gregory: let's bash Obama!

Brooks: Obama's problem is that he
doesn't have great men like Larry Summers
around him and instead just competent
people interested in good government

Gregory: Obama says Republicans have
made preventing people from getting
health care their Holy Grail

Navarro: the GOP doesn't actually agree
on whether to shut down the
government over Obamacare

Richardson: Obamacare has a been a
great success for people with preexisting
conditions or those who may someday get sick

Gregory: interesting

Richardson: the tea party is so enraged by
the removal of lifetime caps they want
to shut down the FBI

Gregory: Obama went after Vlad Putin
comparing him to a bored teenager

Ignatius: he's making wisecracks
about the leader of a major nation

Gregory: he learned it from the tea party

Ignatius: and yet he's got mideast peace
talks started again which is amazing

Gregory: ooh

Ignatius: but Obama is naive if he thinks
the GOP is going to work with him

Brooks: I like it when Obama smacked down Putin

Richardson: that's cool but eventually
we will have to rebuild the relationship –
perhaps the President and Putin can go
to a deserted island together

Navarro: you go to an island with that psycho

Gregory: welcome Congressman King

King: my constituents think Obama
has suspended all laws

Gregory: do you really believe 99% of
Dreamers are drug smugglers with big thighs?

King: that's true - most drug smugglers
have bigger thighs than valedictorians

Gregory: fascinating

King: I sit on the border and see nothing
but brown-skinned kids hauling
100 pounds of marijuana

Gregory: do you really?

King: I have great sympathy for Dreamers
but the Rule of Law and Sovereignty
requires that I call them druggies

Navarro: Steve King is a mediocre Congressman
who only makes news when he says
something racist or stupid or both

Gregory: but he's in the news a lot

King: terrorists are coming across
the border and killing little children

Navarro: this guy is a moron

King: insulting me isn't going to help anything

Navarro: don't talk to me about insults you racist

Richardson: the President should make
a deal on immigration

Gregory: but if it doesn't pass the House
then Obama is a total failure!!!

Ignatius: you know listening to Steve King
I wonder why the GOP has a problem
with hispanics, latinos, and tiny-thighed Americans

Gregory: Jeff Bezos bought the
The Washington Post!

Swisher: this is not the end of news –
it's just that print is dead

Gregory: but the bloggers are so bloggy

Swisher: it's a myth that print is sacred and
wonderful and the Internet is evil and catty

Ignatius: when we heard the news at
The Washington Post we were stunned and
then we thought hey maybe Bezos can save
the paper and throw some nice parties

Gregory: you hosted Nightline when
it was nimble and relevant

Koppel: the great thing about
Meet The Press is it's cheap

Gregory: um thanks

Koppel: it's all about money Fluffy

Brooks: I used to read blogs until I found
out my favorites were written my
junior high school students

Gregory: that makes sense

Brooks: I think people will return to
print and books which are smart and quality

Swisher: oh my god that's stupid –
you sound like a monk bashing the printing press

Brooks: people like interesting things

Ignatius: the Washington Post should
try writing interesting things and also
steal our readers personal information

Gregory: and that's another
episode of Meet The Press

This Week with George Stephanopoulos - August 11, 2013

Guests:
Martha Raddatz
Lon Snowden
Bruce Fein
Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ)
Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA)
Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX)
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX)
Donna Brazile
George Will

Stephanopoulos: hey Martha are those
embassies ever going to re-open or what?

Raddatz: we scared those terrorists
off with our panic

Stephanopoulos: Obama said Ed Snowden
is 'not a patriot' and a 'dweeb'

Raddatz: they want him to come back but
also that he's terribly damaged American security

Stephanopoulos: is your son open to a deal?

Snowden: I'm not

Stephanopoulos: not at all

Snowden: the goal should be justice!

Fein: we're going to visit Ed in Moscow

Stephanopoulos: that should be fun
just don't be openly gay

Fein: Ed is a patriot since he saved
his nation from his government

Stephanopoulos: clever

Snowden: the President is a in tough
spot but my son has sacrificed a lot

Stephanopoulos: are you insisting
on choosing the venue for his trial?

Fein: no just not Virginia which is
full of government bureaucrats and spies

Stephanopoulos: well he did break the law

Fein: not necessarily - he had a First Amendment
right to disclose those secrets

Stephanopoulos: that seems like a stretch

Fein: how is supposed to go to Diane Feinstein
- she thinks he's a traitor and
kept all these secrets for seven years

Snowden: if my son went to Peter King
he would have him killed an buried under
the Capitol with William Howard Taft
and Jimmy Hoffa

Stephanopoulos: Bob would Ed Snowden have
gotten a fair hearing if he had gone to Congress?

Menendez: oh sure he would have –
but instead he undermined the national
security of the United States

Stephanopoulos: Dana Rohrabacher thinks
Snowden is a hero for exposing how evil Obama is

Royce: the Master Bombmaker is teaching
his apprentices to make bombs in America!

Stephanopoulos: oh my

Royce: this guy Snowden helped
Al-Qaeda kill Americans!

Stephanopoulos: yikes

Royce: also Putin is a former head of the KGB
– hardly a civil rights advocate

Menendez: Putin is an authoritarian gay-hating jerk

Stephanopoulos: can Ed Snowden get a
fair trial in the U.S.?

Royce: sure he can – a lot better than people
get in China or Russia

Stephanopoulos: Jon what's up in Iowa?

Karl: I got an exclusive interview with Donald Trump!

Stephanopoulos: sweet

Karl: will you run for President

Trump: well I am amazing

Karl: are you a joke?

Trump: I am a beautiful man with a lot of money

Karl: how much would spend to run for President?

Trump: a million dollars

Karl: what about Paul Ryan?

Trump: He's great but he wants to cut Medicare
which people seem to like

Karl: what about Chris Christie?

Trump: he's a loudmouth bully - I love him

Karl: you were obsessed with the
President's birth certificate

Trump: it's very important issue also
we're not supposed to use the n word anymore

Karl: you believe the President was
born in America now

Trump: no why should I?

Karl: are you crazy?

Trump: our country is being ripped apart by China!

Karl: is Ted Cruz eligible to be President
even though he was born in Canada?

Trump: maybe not

Karl: maybe he is?

Trump: who can say?

Karl: should the government be shut
down to eliminate Obamacare?

Trump: sure why not

Karl: how can Republicans beat Hillary Clinton?

Trump: nominate me

[ break ]

Stephanopoulos: what if Hillary Clinton doesn't run?

Brazile: Democrats like Elizabeth Warren
or Biden or Cuomo

Stephanopoulos: interesting

Brazile: but if Hillary runs it will be a coronation

Stephanopoulos: Sarah Palin is on
the Rand Paul runaway train

Gohmert: people go to Iowa for the fried butter

Will: the Democrats will win again in 2016
– count on it

Castro: if the GOP nominates a tea partier
it will be 1964 all over again

Gohmert: we can win on a platform
of eliminating all income taxes

Will: Rand Paul has the inside track!

Castro: the GOP will probably disappear soon

Stephanopoulos: wow

This Week with George Stephanopoulos – August 4, 2013

Host: Martha Raddatz
Guests:
General Martin E. Dempsey - Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Raddatz: where is Ed Snowden?

Dempsey: I don't know – somewhere in the USSR

Raddatz: Russia

Dempsey: whatever

Raddatz: are you trying to catch him?

Dempsey: Snowden is not doing this for
some noble purpose you know

Raddatz: how much classified material
does he have?

Dempsey: I have no idea

Raddatz: you're so well-informed

Dempsey: I try

Raddatz: can they grab information off his computer?

Dempsey: I don't know - but they probably can

Raddatz: was Egypt a military coup?

Dempsey: we don't know

Raddatz: did Kerry misspeak when he said
the coup restored democracy?

Dempsey: um maybe

Raddatz: is Assad winning the war in his country?

Dempsey: yes but someday he may not

Raddatz: why not?

Dempsey: if we start kicking his ass
with some Assad-fired missiles

Raddatz: how do you view Iraq today
– was it a success?

Dempsey: thousands of Americans died
so they could be they could be who
they want to be

Raddatz: very violent?

Dempsey: we unleashed centuries-old animosities

Raddatz: what lessons have been learned from Iraq?

Dempsey: I learned military force can't make peace

Raddatz: should sex assault charges
be out of the chain of command?

Dempsey: no but we may start treating
women like human beings

Raddatz: you are a grandfather now

Dempsey: I was babysitting infants
which is harder than commanding
100,000 men in combat

Raddatz: you sang the national anthem
in public on the 4 of the July

Dempsey: I rock

Raddatz: thanks for coming
